Brief History
The Story
The L&H is the College Debating Union of University College Dublin, Ireland and was founded in 1855 by Cardinal John Henry Newman in. The L&H is UCD's largest and most prestigious student society.
The L&H is home to the most topical and well attended House Debates in Ireland regarding many contempary issues affecting society today. The L&H has been host to many important figures in society and has a long list of notable honorary fellows and awardees who have received the Society's highly prestigious James Joyce Award. Guests and award winners come to address members of the society, and past recipients include every Taoisech and President since the foundation of the Republic of Ireland, Sir Stephen Fry, Noam Chomsky, Emeli Sandé, Will Ferrell, Martin Freeman and Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
